About this episode
Wartime Everyday Survival in Nazi Berlin — Part One Ian Buruma, author of Stay Alive: Berlin 1939–1945, explores daily life in wartime Berlin through the letters of his father, Leo Buruma, a Dutch student forced into labor, examining how ordinary citizens, foreign workers, and social outsiders navigated Joseph Goebbels’ propaganda apparatus, the Nuremberg racial laws, and severe moral dilemmas. Buruma details cultural escapism through popular cinema and jazz, alongside the Wannsee Conference that organized the systematic industrial extermination of Europe’s Jewish population. (3)
